Each raft was connected by a rope bridge, which wobbled slightly as we passed. In contrast, Klong Mangtra Rop Chiang Mai does not give details of the exact location where the bard crosses into Burma. Our team found out that Ban Mae Sam Laep is close to the Song Khwae estuary where the bard stayed overnight. We therefore concluded that it could be the bard's likely destination. Ban Mae Sam Laep is a small village nestled between the Salween River and the surrounding low hills. It is currently located at Moo 1, Mae Sam Laep, Sob Mei district, Ma Hong Son. The name of the village seems to be derived from the Mae Sam Lab River, which flows through the village before joining the Salween River. Due to the topography, the village has a few flat areas. As a result, some houses have been built in a long row along the riverbank, jutting out towards the river. A narrow road runs along the promontory in front of the village. However, the Mae Sam Laep River is now quite dry and shallow. An interview with residents revealed that the community was established between 50 and 60 years ago. Initially, the area was known for the trade of rare forest items by merchants from Mae Sariang, Chiang Mai and Bangkok, as well as export goods from Burmese merchants. Before roads were built, goods were transported by foot, motorbike or pack-ox. When war broke out between the Burmese government and the Karen people, some Burmese migrated and settled in the area. According to registration statistics, most of the migrants had fled by 1972, said Seda Pamavorasakul, a sub-district administration officer. The Karen community lives in Ban Mae Sam Laep. Some were originally from the area, while others fled the war along with other ethnic groups such as Shans, Muslims and Indians who also migrated there. Each ethnic group here has its own beliefs; there are also Buddhist, Christian and Islamic communities. In fact, the places of worship for these religions are intermingled with the residential areas. Burmese monks and novices run the two Buddhist temples in the area. The majority of people in Ban Mae Sam Laep work as merchants. The lack of arable land means that few people farm. Boatmen are also common and are responsible for showing tourists the breathtaking scenery of the Salween River or transporting goods to remote areas along the river that are inaccessible by car. Most of the goods processed here are Thai products transported through Mae Sariang. These include food, medicine, tools and equipment. Other products from Burma include cattle, shallots, garlic, coconut sugar and egg noodles. Cattle imported from Myanmar must undergo a period of quarantine and testing before being exported. Ban Mae Sam Lab School provides education for students from kindergarten to grade 6. Students who wish to continue their education after high school often attend schools in Mae Sariang district or in Chiang Mai. In terms of public health, a health promotion hospital was built in Mae Sam Lab sub-district as a health facility for the local community due to the limited access to and from the area. However, local residents claimed that some patients at the hospital were of Burmese nationality, especially during periods of conflict on the Burmese side. Note: We gathered information about Ban Mae Sam Lab through surveys and interviews with villagers and shopkeepers. As part of this research, we spoke to two knowledgeable people - Seda Pamavorasakul, an officer from the Sub-district Administrative Organisation, and Mr Wasan Namchaithossaphol, an assistant village headman. We would like to express our gratitude to them. |
